The way this Winter is going we are going to be way below our snowpack/reservoir reserves and I do believe it will be a hot summer, jacking the Valley into their life of air conditioning; electricity will get very expensive.

Then the fires will ravage the extremely dry landscape and states of emergency will be declared from Chico to San Diego. There isn't any money now, there won't be any then.

I'm just saying. We're already in a drought situation here in California.

I guess I'll wag the dog and brew another batch.

It's been a crazy mild winter so far. We had maybe six days of rain and it just ended with a forecast of mid 60s for the week. Just before the rain came for a visit we were back out to the Berkeley Marina for a beautiful afternoon. The burrowing owls were back as well.

The most amazing beef broth ever. We go for lunch, but for tonight, I went and got two medium phở with all the fixings and no meat. Then I stopped at the butcher and got a grass fed filet sliced thin. Tonight we'll drop pieces of raw meat into the hot soup where they cook for a second and then melt in the mouth.
That and a 2007 Domaine de Cristia Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

On a recent trip to Rochester, NY and Martha's Vineyard, MA I tried more than a few locals and the best beers of the trip were on Concourse C Terminal 2 at Salt Lake International Airport. Squatter's has been converting Mormons since 1989 and they are keeping it local and organic.

Outer Darkness
Welcome to the biggest beer Squatters has ever made! A Russian Imperial Stout is one of the most intensely flavored beers a brewer can create. The combination of rich roasted barley, oak, molasses and licorice root combine to create an utterly unique and complex imperial stout experience.
We had to mash in twice to get our starting gravity of 27 plato (1.108 specific gravity). We boiled 3.5 hrs to enhance caramelization and used molasses and licorice root at the end of boil. Outer Darkness is aged with oak, has 65 ibu's and bottle conditioned. We hope you have as much fun drinking it as we did making it. Please share with another and drink wisely. 10.5%

The Lost Bird Project memorializes 5 North American birds driven to extinction in modern times--the Carolina Parakeet, the Great Auk, the Heath Hen, the Labrador Duck and the Passenger Pigeon. Each memorial is being installed in the location where the extinct bird or flock of birds was last seen.

Strutting through the brush, male Heath Hens boomed and pounded the earth to attract a mate. Each year, returning to their breeding grounds, they engaged in spectacular displays of bravado and strength, jumping and spinning in the air, thrusting their chests against one another, as they competed for the right to propagate their species.

When European settlers arrived on the east coast, they hunted the bird so extensively that servants bargained not to be fed Heath Hen more than two or three times a week. The Heath Hen’s habitat stretched along the coast of New England from Maine to Virginia. But by 1870, due to overexploitation, the Heath Hen population on the mainland of the east coast had vanished.

Numbering in the 100’s, the survivors lived on Martha’s Vineyard. Over the next quarter of a century, the state of Massachusetts attempted to save them: enacting a hunting ban, shooting predatory animals, planting crops to feed the hens, and establishing a reserve in 1908. But numbers continued to diminish. A disastrous fire and the unfortunate arrival of goshawks, a serious Heath Hen predator, ravaged the remaining population.

Heath Hens usually flew only to the lower branches of trees. But in 1929 ornithologists witnessed a hopeful male fly to the top of a tree and call out, loud and repeatedly, across the island. There were no Heath Hens to hear his plea. He was last seen on March 11, 1932.

Martha's Vineyard (Wampanoag: Noepe) is an island (including the smaller Chappaquiddick Island) off the south of Cape Cod in New England, known for being an affluent summer colony. The islands both form a part of the Outer Lands region. wiki

About a month ago, he heard from the owner, Kelly Jacobs, that she wanted to sell the brewery and gave Steve a price if he was interested. So Steve went to work, found partners and investors in short order and made an offer based on his earlier conversation with Jacobs. No dice. The price was now inexplicably higher. They tried again with higher offers, but each time the owners kept raising the price. Then they fired John, their only salesman. Last Thursday, they tried one last offer, which met with the same frustrating negative response. On Friday, the day before Steve was scheduled to take a family vacation, he asked for explanation. He was told they “decided on another offer, and they don’t need you. Thanks, but get out.” In less than two hours he was locked out of the brewery that he helped build for the past fourteen years. - Jay Brooks

Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia's Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It's a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.

The barmaid poured it in two pulls, even though it wasn't on nitro, and I enjoyed it even more.

I always liked Joe Renzetti.

I haven't listened to His entire catalog but I do find some of the Soundtracks to His Life/Mind to be quite co-habitable. I, of course, am drawn to the darker movie running through my head. Lalurie, Tortured Landscapes, I need to hear the rest of Talking to the Dead and Thenatos. Other tracks miss me by a trickle.

They set out in a '66 Impala armed with a "treasure map" on a journey to find a secret garden near Point Reyes. They met there at the same time every day and continued their quest. In the United States...

Since the AIDS epidemic began in 1981, 1.7 million Americans have been infected with HIV and more than 617,025 have died of AIDS-related causes.
1.1 million Americans are living with HIV/AIDS, representing a slight increase over time as people are living longer with HIV disease and new infections remain relatively stable.
An estimated 21% of people living with HIV are undiagnosed.
Every 9 1/2 minutes, someone in the U.S. is infected with HIV.
Gay and bisexual men accounted for 53% of new HIV infections in 2006, and are the only group for which new infections are on the rise.
African-Americans and Latinos are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS. Blacks accounted for 45% of new HIV infections in 2006 and 47% of those living with the disease, yet they make up only 12% of the U.S. population. Latinos account for 17% of new infections yet comprise 15% of the U.S. population, while whites represent 35% of new infections and account for 66% of the total population.
The AIDS diagnosis rate for African-Americans is more than 9 times that of whites, and the HIV rate is 7 times greater among blacks than whites. Survival after an AIDS diagnosis is lower for blacks than any other racial/ethnic group.
Young adults and teens between 13 and 29 represent 34% of new HIV infections, the largest share of any age group. Black teens are disproportionately affected, representing 68% of reported AIDS cases among 13 to 19-year-olds in 2007.
Women now account for 27% of HIV infections, with 280,000 women living with HIV and AIDS. Black women accounted for two thirds (64%) of new AIDS diagnoses among women in 2009; Latinas represented 18% and white women, 15%.
71% of all AIDS cases reported since the beginning of the epidemic are concentrated in 10 states or territories. While the District of Columbia has the highest AIDS case rate (119.8 per 100,000 in 2009), the states of New York (17.7%), California (14.2%) and Florida (10.7%) have the most cumulative AIDS cases.

In the World...

Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, 60 million people have contracted HIV and 25 million have died of AIDS-related causes.
An estimated 33.3 million people are living with HIV/AIDS.
In 2009, an estimated 2.6 million people were newly infected with HIV.

In Mill Valley, Marin County just North of the Golden Gate, cycling is everywhere. On the weekends all the little roads from the 101 up and over to the Coast are populated with cyclists. As evidence to this Whole Paycheck (a boutique grocery chain) has put this work station out in front of it's local. There is no bike shop in this particular unassuming strip mall, but if you should break down here, there are a variety of tools and a pump just outside of their overpriced produce, beer, and deli.

And after all the feet of snow over the last few days we needed them. Snowshoeing again off in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada. Away from the crowds, under bluebird skies, we hiked more than a few miles in the deep powder. Keeping an eye for the day-glow orange ribbons marking the trail. By afternoon the snow became the now World Famous Sierra Cement, heavy and wet. Spring has Sprung in the Sierra. Back to the grind in the morning.

That was an exciting finish for the Aussie. I got to watch it all unfold "live". Channel 11-3 on our No Cable-Just Digital Airwaves TV is Universal Sports.

A few years ago, the approach to Finale of the Milano-San Remo cycling tour changed to include the famous twists and turns of Le Manie. This year, a light rain just as the riders arrived made for slippery going. Listen for the squeal of the breaks and the cries of "piano" / "slowly" from the crowd. Look for the Italian champion pass around 1:10, a test of the wet road at 1:20 and the World Champion (number 211) take the turn at 1:30.

The sun is shining and I needed a stout for my stew, so I grabbed my Triple Rock Growler and headed North. Their version of a growler is a 1 gal. bladder in a cardboard box with a valve. Their version of a (Stonehenge) Stout is absolutely delicious.

Spring is about to happen, any second, then I'll stop boring you with beer and be back to boring you with birds and bicycles and beauties and beer. Got a couple of bikes to show you but they're not quite ready.
